Dog & Pony Schooling Show - Oct. 2007

Our friends out in Grantsville, UT just had another fun pony schooling show last weekend, and invited donkeys and mules to join them. The day started off cold and cloudy with snow on the ground (it snowed the night before), but we braved the cold and went to have fun anyway. Soon the sun came out and the rest of the day was just beautiful. I took my gelding, Andy, and we had a fantastic time!

We had the privilege of meeting another donkey & mule owner at the show, who I've corresponded with over the years, but never gotten to meet in person. He lives over the mountain from where we are. He brought some of his miniature horses to the show, but we had a great time talking "longears", too.

Andy competed in Donkey Halter, Country Pleasure Driving, Polebending and Barrel Racing. Andy placed 1st out of 3 donkeys in the Donkey Halter class, and then went on to receive the Champion Donkey/Mule Halter award out of 5 entries. Andy placed 4th out of 8 entries in the Country Pleasure Driving class, 3rd out of 4 entries in Barrel Racing, and 2nd out of 4 entries in Polebending.

Here are a few photos from the show:

PS. The dog following the one cart belonged to the lady driving that cart and pony. She was the show organizer. Her dog just stood out of the way and watched all of the other contestants, but seemed to think they were supposed to follow her and her pony when it was their turn to go. :-)

Andy and me waiting for the show to begin.

Andy meets Trooper, another mammoth gelding who lives at the farm where the show was being held. Trooper is one of my new students. His owner and I hope to teach him a few more ground manners and soon have him riding nicely.

Trooper didn't want to stop visiting when it was time for the donkey and mule halter classes, so I took Trooper and showed him (and made him mind) while his owner showed Andy for me in the donkey & mule halter classes. Here are a couple of the other entries in donkey and mule halter.

Since Andy was Halter Champion out of the donkey and mule division, I got to show him in the Overall Halter Champion class with the other horse halter champions. Here are a couple photos from that class. The Fjord was the Overall Halter Grand Champion.

Later in the afternoon we had more driving classes. We got a bunch of photos of the Trail Driving class while Andy and I were waiting for our Country Pleasure Driving class. They had a really fun trail driving course! But I didn't want to over-do it with Andy since I haven't done much with him this summer and he's a bit out of shape right now. So we just enjoyed watching everyone else navigate the course.

Then it was time for Country Pleasure Driving. Here are a few photos from that class. Andy was the only driving donkey, and there were 7 miniature horses and ponies.

It was getting late in the afternoon, so some of the contestents were starting to pack up and head home, but a couple of us stayed to do Barrel Racing...

... And polebending.

Then we had the treat of watching the teams driving class! There were two teams there this time - both owned by the same family. They had to drive them one at a time, since they only had one wagon with them, but we still enjoyed watching them. I need to get a few repairs done on my wagon, and then maybe I can join them next time with my donkey team!

Here are a few more miscellaneous driving photos and some of our spectators.
